Is it necessary to use the "Safely remove Hardware" when removing USB Flash Key Cards?

a salesperson recommended to use this feature in XP instead of just removing the USB Flash memory keychain storage card. Thanks for your input

Is it necessary to use the "Safely remove Hardware" when removing USB Flash Key Cards?
It's supposed to prevent damage to the flash card memory.

However, what I've found is that if I do that but then want to reinsert the usb device the computer won't recognise it until I've rebooted.

So normally I just remove it after it's finished writing or whatever.

edit - I only do this with flash cards and mp3 players, definately not my hard drive
Reply:I think it is just a precaution that prevents the data from being corrupted, should you remove it while working on something.
Reply:actually its have not a roll. It's depends on the mark of your flash memory. For some flash memories its not necessary but some them it's not like them and they broken down.

***But be careful don't remove them when they are working!!!

Reply:If that's the way windows is set up yes it is, because if u just unplug it anytime u cud loose data. This setting can be changed in windows so u can unplug anytime but I don't know how. When u clik the icon on ur system tray to unplug it look for settings that u can change. I run an external hardrive so I know of what u speak.
Reply:Right click on any hard drive, select properties, go to Hardware, find your flash drive and click on it, then click on properties again and go to Policies.

If the drive is set to Optimize for Quick Removal you don't need to use safetly remove hardware, as long as your not writing or reading anything from the flash drive.

If it's set to Optimize for Preformance then you will always need to use Safely Remove Hardware.

Optimize for Quick Removal should be the default for USB Flash Drives.
