He has a specially-equipped computer that he controls to communicate with. It produces audible speech using a computerized voice. Common phrases and individual words and letters for regular speech requirements can also be selected by him, but is a bit more tedious.
I'm still wondering if Professor Hawkings uses flash cards to say whatever he whats to say...?
