What are the differences between compact flash and memory stick pro cards?

The two major manufacturers of professional digital SLR cameras (Canon and Nikon) both use CompactFlash cards. There are a couple of reasons. First they were designed to have an ultimate capacity of over 135 GB of storage. And secondly of the two formats available when DSLR cameras were first coming to the market, the CF card was the least susceptible to damage. The SmartMedia cards were prone to getting finger prints on the contacts and sometimes cause total failure of the card. The memory stick and memory stick pro cards were at one time a proprietary card which only worked on Sony cameras and devices. I don't see that there are many pro level cameras out there that have the capacity of using the Sony card.
