I have a Compact Flash card that has just reached image number 9999. Can I reformat it and use it again?

The card has reset itself to image 0000 (and corrupted, but that's another story and I've recovered the images thankfully). At the moment it is useless. Do I throw it away and buy another (I really don't want to as it's a 2GB card and was quite expensive), or is there a way to reformat it and use it again?

Of course. In fact it normal to reformat the card between use.

I normally reformat the card (compact flash) just before I shoot weddings. This way I am sure that the card is "fresh" and free from corruption.

Memory cards were designed for this kind of use. In fact the fact that you didn't format it till now is abnormal.

Next time, take your pictures and the download it burn it on to CD / DVD and then reformat it and then restart.

Good Luck

Reply:You should find another camera / accessory shop. They should have told you that your compact flash memory cards are re-usable. Report Abuse

Reply:If your computer as Chip slots in it, you can open the card up there and format from the desktop, or you can manually do it from the camera. The cards are well worth formatting to reuse them.
Reply:CF cards will reformat about 2000 times.
Reply:right click on start, browse file, click on explore go to your compact flash card clip on card and scroll down until format comes up click on format answer yes it will come back clean pop it in to you camera and it will say no images hey presto
Reply:The computer in your camera is programming the card. In the future I'd consider stopping at about 9000 and then buying a new card, then You have a memory back up for your images. Most cameras imprint much more memory, I think this is the case because I still haven't filled up my 1st 2 gig and it is much less than 9999 photos, however I know what twice as many would be based on my previous 1 gigs. I could be wrong about the memory actually - you might have a better camera I don't know. I do know my camera is set on maximum pixelation, and this ends up eating memory.
