Is it possible to turn a 2 or 4 GB FLASH memory SD card or USB stick in to a bootable hard drive for a laptop or desktop? There would be no other hard drive in the system.

It is if the system BIOS and the flash drive support it. You wouldn't want to use flash as a hard drive for general use though. Search google for "booting flash [your operating system of choice]".
