Hi, I would like to know if other brands (ie. Scandisk, Samsung, Lexar etc...) of compact flash card would work on the DSLR-A300. Or must it be the original Sony one?

Yes, you can use all brands of CF cards with it.
For inexpensive cards, keep an eye out for sales both in-store and online. Beware of ebay though, many of the cards sold on ebay are fakes.
